Venture Partner Connections Forum

Several readers have mentioned to me that there is no action follow-up. We're sharing ideas that have no place to go.

What we need is a forum -- a conference? a shark tank? -- that connects funders, ideators, content sources, outreach services and researchers. Content sources might be other state departments (parks, public health, human services... and of course education) along with non-profits. Outreach services... more »

MYOPIA: An intergenerational collective action game series

ABSTRACT

Myopia is a multiplayer turn-based strategy game about time, choices, and consequences. Players assume roles of political, business, military, and civic leaders in a series of epochs taking place between 1900 and 2050, each centered about a social dilemma of the time — a greater good is possible when players work together, but often-conflicting incentives make cooperation and trust difficult. The impact of... more »

Build Serious 3D Simulation Games for training.

Just about every worker in America is at an age where you have played an electronic game or know someone that has. There is no need for manuals or training video's for playing a game like the Legend of Zelda, Age of Empires or Need for Speed. It is easy to think of the benefits of offering a 3D interactive training game to the 500,000 postal workers, TSA staff or DMV officers, etc. Fun. Studies have shown that serious... more »

Getting kids interested in programming with Minecraft

Too many kids aren't interested in learning programming, and many existing programming resources can be difficult, dry, or at least uninspiring.

"Learn to Program with Minecraft Plugins" is a new book by Andy Hunt (pragprog.com/titles/ahmine) to try and engage avid Minecraft players and teach them the very basics of Java programming.

This hits couple of very necessary points (IMHO): the game environment is already... more »

FPS + Math + Physics

My short and to the point suggestion is to take the idea of Typing of the Dead, and expand upon that concept further with other high profile games and other subjects. It is a better approach to get at the attention of users and hold it for prolonged periods of time while educating.

Spent, a social action game aimed at showing people that homelessness is about circumstances and not character was chosen as an example of a persuasive game for a study last year.

Communication Skills: Keyboarding

Several years ago, I developed a game called Type to Learn 4, which uses games to help people of all ages improve their typing skills. That game touched on social media, featuring one game in which the player has to compose and send text messages.

The ability to communicate clearly and effectively is more important now than ever, in our world of rapid communication and instant feedback. We should develop a Web-based... more »

Minecraft Needs More

Minecraft is a force with young learners... and well meaning parents and teachers want to capture it for learning, but struggle. Many great resources exist with lesson plans, but they seem to be a) oriented to specific content (archeology, for example) and b) great for adults who already use Minecraft. More resources on how to use Minecraft to encourage leadership, collaboration, communication and mentoring would be wonderful,... more »
