The Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) was born in 2005 from the desire to stimulate industry creativity and generate institutional interest towards the use of digital game technology and approaches for training and education. A partnership was formed with the organizers of Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), the National Training Systems Association (NTSA), and the ...more »
Too many kids aren't interested in learning programming, and many existing programming resources can be difficult, dry, or at least uninspiring. "Learn to Program with Minecraft Plugins" is a new book by Andy Hunt (pragprog.com/titles/ahmine) to try and engage avid Minecraft players and teach them the very basics of Java programming. This hits couple of very necessary points (IMHO): the game environment is already ...more »
Just about every worker in America is at an age where you have played an electronic game or know someone that has. There is no need for manuals or training video's for playing a game like the Legend of Zelda, Age of Empires or Need for Speed. It is easy to think of the benefits of offering a 3D interactive training game to the 500,000 postal workers, TSA staff or DMV officers, etc. Fun. Studies have shown that serious ...more »

ABSTRACT Myopia is a multiplayer turn-based strategy game about time, choices, and consequences. Players assume roles of political, business, military, and civic leaders in a series of epochs taking place between 1900 and 2050, each centered about a social dilemma of the time — a greater good is possible when players work together, but often-conflicting incentives make cooperation and trust difficult. The impact of ...more »
Several readers have mentioned to me that there is no action follow-up. We're sharing ideas that have no place to go. What we need is a forum -- a conference? a shark tank? -- that connects funders, ideators, content sources, outreach services and researchers. Content sources might be other state departments (parks, public health, human services... and of course education) along with non-profits. Outreach services ...more »

Millions of youth and adults struggle every day with rejection caused by inappropriate interpersonal communication skills, many of them right here in the U.S.A. I am a type 1 diabetic and have had this condition for over 10 years now (diagnosed at 9 years old), and I have always loved video games since I was 5. I am currently studying Computer Science in college, and in my last semester in one of my programming classes, my final project was to create a game with a serious meaning. What I created, is currently a simple prototype for a game (and by prototype I mean, just ...more »
I'm really keen to make a large, open content, strategy title that explores the core issue of power, it's use and generation and the consequences of these. Games are the idea medium for this because they allow the player to take long and short term decisions and see how they play out. So do you invest in nuclear and risk an accident, in coal and create more CO2? One costs more up front the other less now but has knock-on ...more »
A game that gives players basic disaster preparedness training, all while being chased by zombies. You are Ed. You are young and full of juice. You can rock it might after night, trying to score. Or you could play it differently.
The game is amoral. It simply allows you to play out the lifetime consequences of your behavior. STD is a minor factor in the game, its real focus is on fatherhood and family. It doesn't preach and it doesn't fake. It just lets you find new ways to keep score.
So much human misery results from distorted decision-making. Bad purchases. Bad career moves. Bad surgeries. Bad wars. And of course, bad science.
In an immersive and plot-driven adventure game, players can learn to recognize cognitive biases and to avoid the dangerous traps that biases present. This promises to improve the quality of decisions the players later make in the real world.
